Black as the night
A horse that is blacker than a raven’s feather.
It would be hard to find someone with skin darker than this equine.
First, what do you call him? Blackie for short? He looks like he has some soul. How about Darky or Midnight instead of “black,” which can sound derogatory when used in certain contexts? Any other ideas? Let us know! But we should also mention..
I don’t want my kids growing up thinking it’s okay to call people “darkies.” If they ask why not say something along these lines: It was once a word used by slave owners to describe slaves who worked at nighttime and so became dark in the skin.
This is a very dark-skinned horse, so give him one of these names instead: Midnight or Darky for short
Or try to find a name that’s not just their color like Blackberry or Chocolate Chip Cookie (although if you really want to use “black,” maybe think about using it in combination with another word -like Jet, Ebony, Raven…)
When my son was born we found out he had some issues and his doctor said he might have albinism. But I didn’t want people calling him what they called me when I was younger because apparently Albino means white person who is bad luck! So we named him Jaxson after President Jackson. My mom told us this story about how my grandfather was a black man who went to work in the fields one day and when he came home, his wife told him that a horse had been eating apples from their backyard. They called it Black Horse because that’s what it looked like.
What is your name?
Do you have any nicknames for me?
When did you first start thinking about horses?
How many times before you finally found out what I am really called or nicknamed as (even if they are not on this list)? Which of these names do you think would be best for our animal friend here with us today? Why might that be true even though all its other traits are different than yours? Have we ever met another horse together? What are some of your favorite things to do with me?
The Black Horse Playbook: take the time to sit down and really get a feel for the horse. This is one way you can connect in a more personal, meaningful manner; it could be said that this is how we bond as friends or partners. Caring about each other isn’t just an actit’s something that must be done every day throughout our lives together if we want our friendship/relationship to last!
This list has been shared by people who have lived through these situations, so hopefully there will be someone on here who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to Black Horses (and White Horses). I hope you find at least one situation that resonates with you.
I really hope these images, words and phrases are meaningful to someone out there! I had so much fun writing them down for everyone it was like a therapy session in sense. At the end, I’ve also included some of my favorite quotes about Black Horses (and White Horses) from different writers throughout history:
Laura Fraser of The Guardian says “Some people can’t deal with black horse but if you do come across one it is worth making an effort to have your horse around.” Cheryl Strayed says “Black Horse Playbook Quotes” on her Twitter page. Nina Simone sings “You don’t know what love is until you love a Black Horse” in her song “Black Horses.”
I hope you enjoy the read!

The Black Horse Playbook:
What to Do/Say Instead of “I’m so sorry for your loss”
“I’m here if you need anything.”
“Can I do anything? Anything at all?”
What to Say When Someone is Upset about a Misunderstanding or Mistake You Made and They Haven’t Called Forgiveness Yet. – “Please forgive me” + an apology (i.e., what they were upset about) instead of asking them how they are doing, telling them that it’s no big deal, or denying responsibility. What To Say After A Conversation Ends Without The Other Person Saying Goodbye First. – “Goodbye!” not just “Bye.” What To Say When You Feel Angry or Upset About A Situation.
“I’m angry”
“It makes me feel hurt when you do that”
What to Say After Someone Asks How You’re Doing, Is It Okay? – “Yes! I’m doing great!” not just saying ‘yes’ and continuing on with the conversation. What To Say If You Want Something From Another Person (Like a Date). – “Can we please meet up later?” instead of asking for something without specifying what it is like a date request in texts/social media messages. What Do People Mean When They Use The Phrase, “Doing Fine”? – This can mean many things–doing well, doing great, feeling good–but often people use it to mean they’re not too upset about something. What To Say If You Have Low Self-Esteem? – “I’m really worried that a lot of things are going wrong with my life”
What Should I Do When Someone Is Upset Or Getting Mad At Me For Something? – Ask them what you can do for them and apologize if there was any wrongdoing on your part. Don’t try to fix anything by saying sorry unless you’ve done or said something hurtful.
The Black Horse Playbook: Ten Names for Black Horses + What to Call Them Instead (i)nstead)
Ten Clichés & The Slang Terms To Use Instead
Hackney: This is a type of British breed that was developed in England. You can also use the term “Old English” to describe this horse if you don’t know its name.
Bucking Horse: When you say bucking horses, people might think about rodeos or cowboys on their backs who are trying to stay atop them as they go crazy and thrash around wildly. If someone says they’re going out riding for fun, mention trail rides instead–these usually involve calm ponies walking through beautiful scenery like woods and fields with plenty of space between each other and trees so it’s easy for animals to pass by one another safely without kicking up dirt from the ground into your face or getting tangled in each other’s reins.
Clippings Horse: This is a type of horse that is usually used for clipping sheep or goats, but they can also be used to get rid of an overgrowth of weeds in pastures. A lot people use the term “weed eater” to describe horses like this. If someone says their horse had a great time today with its job as weed-eater, mention grazing instead–this means eating plants and leaves from the ground which often happen when you’re either out on trail rides or just leisurely walking around your pasture at home.
Draft Horse: Draft horses are larger than ponies because they were bred to pull heavy loads carting materials such as bricks or clay pots across fields before mechan “A Black Horse is: a person who has absolutely no control over their life.” “a situation that you can’t escape from, even though it’s toxic and making your life miserable. It could be an addiction or something in the past haunting you.” “when someone does something to stop themselves from moving forward and progress with their lives because they don’t want to face what hurt them early on.” “It can also refer to people who are too negative about everything, always pointing out the worst case scenario for every opportunity presented.” (All of these words have been used as clichés) “When black horse shows up try..” (For example.. ) Acknowledge The Struggle Understand where
