Labels started singing when she was just three years old while attending church with her grandmother who would often put on records by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. At six, Labelle’s family moved to New Jersey where they made their living from running a French bakery at which Labelle worked after school. Labelle and her older sister, Edna, were encouraged to sing by their mother who loved music as much as they did.
