It’s too cold in this office. As I type, my fingers are stiff and numb from the chill that runs through the room. It doesn’t help that I am sitting by a window with nothing but an air conditioner for warmth. The wind blows fiercely outside, whipping around corners to penetrate our sanctuary of productivity and success our building.
I find myself shivering as goosebumps form on my skin; soon enough they turn into tiny ice cubes that fall off me like snowflakes. Natalie is freezing today!
What are the consequences of not wearing enough layers? Well, for one thing, I can’t get any work done. It’s just too difficult to focus on my keyboard with my fingers so stiff and clumsy from trying to keep warm. Plus, it feels like we’ve been sitting here all day; when really only an hour has gone by since lunchtime (or what used to be lunchtime).
I am sure that many people in this office have experienced similar problems and yet they still don’t take the necessary precautions! They’re constantly complaining about how cold it is or asking if someone turned off the heat again without putting on a sweater over their business-casual attire. I can’t help but feel like I am the only one who takes these things seriously.
I have to admit, it’s a little bit of an annoyance that my co-workers are so remiss about their responsibilities around here. But on the other hand, I know they’re doing what they think is best for them in this situation and if that means not wearing enough layers then there must be something else going on with them something more serious than freezing at work.
Maybe you should try pouring yourself some tea as well! And maybe next time we need to make sure our thermostat has been turned up before we come into work?
Natalie is Freezing!
It feels like a million degrees below zero outside today without the windchill. I don’t know how Natalie can be so cold in the office with all of us sitting around a nice warm fire!
It’s on my way home anyways, and it would be really rude for me to turn down her request just because she is wearing less than appropriate attire…
I’m glad you’re not as cold as Natalie in our office today 🙂
So what am I supposed to do about this? Am I expected to dress nicer every day now just so that no one feels “uncomfortable” when they come into work? And why should it matter anyway if we are uncomfortable or not—it’s everyone else who is freezing out there! It makes me wonder: have these people never experienced the sensation of being cold?
Anyway, I hope that she at least has a coat on.
I’m going to go see if she needs anything from me before I leave for the day.
Natalie’s teeth are chattering and she asks me, “Do you have anything for the cold?” Looking around my office I see no blankets or hats that might help her out. She has already requested a desk closer to the window which is right next to our heating vent; now it looks like we will need another heater in here! It was hard enough this morning when all of us were shivering uncontrollably, but Natalie seems worse than most people today.
I search through my cabinets one more time before telling her “no” again and apologizing…and then I leave for home-warming fire awaits me there. And as I walk by other offices on my way out of work, some with their doors open and others who keep them shut, I wonder how a person can not feel the cold today.
